When it comes to black metal, it seems contradictory to have any religion attached to it, especially if that religion is Christianity. When considering Black Metal, it is rare to find music that gives a Christian message. If the genre is based on the meaning that Euronymous gave to black metal—that it should be satanic and heavy—then black metal in Christianity should never exist. Since many people felt the same, the bands of Christian black metal came to be called unblack metal, even if they had all the elements of black metal music. When it comes to black metal, the most important factor that people consider is the sound, not the message. This is because the signature of black metal music is about the sound since there are other satanic and heavy music that do not qualify as black metal. Many people who take the time to appreciate and understand unblack metal can be happy with the Christian bands that choose to get into the music genre that was developed to persecute them in the first place.
This is the band made up by drummer Jayson Sherlock who was an ex-member of the band Mortification. He enjoyed the sound of the black metal music but was not happy with the messages that they were giving. This is why he decided to create music for the people like him who were looking for an alternative. This is how he came up with Horde, and he produced Hellig Usvart, which translates as holy unblack. However, the fans of black metal did not take this well and they even issued death threats to Sherlock. However, he was the precursor of other people who started to sing in this subgenre.
Antestor followed in the steps of Horde, and they wanted to show that it is possible to have unblack metal. They are notable as an unblack band, and they influenced other similar bands that came after them. Antestor began the movement called Christian Doom and the thrash band called Crush Evil. The band became well known, but when Papa Euronymous came to know about it, he made threats towards it. However, the band did not stop but changed their name and started to be called Antestor. They also started to write songs using the sounds of Norwegian black metal. They said that they do not identify themselves as having the black metal belief or ideology but by their music style.
The band was popular in the unblack scene when the movement started in the year 2000. At the beginning, they started with a symphonic or ambient style of black metal called Veil Remembrance, and they showcased the shift and were influenced by more death metal bands. They are among the heaviest unblack bands that people have ever seen. They are the band to look for if someone is wanting something a little dark and brutal.
The band is not only unblack but also a folk metal band. They have roots in folk metal and they put these elements into their live performance.
Other bands in this genre include Frosthardr, Frost Like Ashes and Sanctifica.
