Black Metal – started to become popular in the 1980s with death metal and thrash metal bands forming the prototype for black metal. This is what came to be known as the first wave, which included different bands like Celtic Frost, Hellhammer, Mercyful Fate and Venom. The second wave took place in the 1990s and Norwegian bands like Emperor, Immortal, Gorgoroth, Burzum, Darkthorne and Mayhem were at the top of the genre. The early Norwegian black metal scene developed the style with their forbearers in a different genre. The black metal genre that was inspired by the Norwegian bands emerged around North America and Europe, even if there are some scenes which developed their own styles. The Swedish bands spawned in the second wave. The bands like Dark Funeral, Nifelheim and Marduk have always been notable examples of the black metal bands.
The genre was first referred to as satanic metal, and black metal met with different hostilities from the main culture because of the ideologies and actions that are associated with the bands. Different artists were expressing misanthropic and anti-Christian views, which were advocating ethnic paganism and Satanism. There are also some black metal ideologies that were pro Neo Nazi movements, but these got shunned by many prominent artists. Normally, the black metal groups do their best to stay inaccessible to the mainstream and to the people who have not committed themselves to the lifestyle.
Even if the modern black metal is referred to as Norwegian style with shirking vocals together with raw production, this term is also being used for the bands that have different sounds.
For the instrumentation, the black metal guitarists favor the high pitched and trebly guitar tones with heavy distortion. The guitar is normally played using unmated tremolo and fast picking. The guitarists do use dissonance with the intervals and scales together with the chord progressions in order to create a feeling of dread. The flat-fight and tritone are used most of the time, and the low guitar turning or guitar solos are normally rare in the black metal genre.
Lyrics and Vocals
Normally, the black metal bands like to use high pitched and raspy vocals together with snarling, screaming and shrieking. The vocal style was influenced by death growls and Quorthons. Black metal usually attacks Christianity or other religious institutions and they may use apocalyptic language. The use of the satanic lyrics is not new, and some consider them to be essential to the black metal. Also common in the black metal lyrics is harsher and wilder aspects of nature, including blizzards, storms, winter, mountains, forests and wilderness. The artists are also typically fascinated about the distant past.
